Stepping into the milk room of Vetsch Dairy in Little Falls, brothers Mike and Wayne Vetsch milk about 5,000 pounds of milk per day, which flows into a 4,000-gallon tank. The cows are brought from a free-stall barn to the nearby milk barn to be milked twice a day. Well familiar with the routine on the farm, there is usually no trouble getting the cows to and from the barn. At this time, 140 cows are in production.

We bring down 70 at a time to be milked,” Mike said.

The story of Vetsch Dairy began in 1968, when their parents, Eugene and Barbara Vetsch, purchased the farm and moved there the following spring. There, they raised seven children — Leon, Vernon, Jay, Mike, Wayne, Julene and Gina — while dairy farming, as well as caring for Eugene’s aging father, Jacob Vetsch, for 12 years.
