On July 10, the new nine holes at the Pierz Golf Course had their grand opening, doubling the course’s total holes to 18. However, the journey to create these holes was long, difficult and not always visible to the public.
The story goes back over eight years to December 2016, when the city of Pierz purchased a plot of land that would years later become home to the new nine. At the time, members of the city council considered many options for what the land could be used for, including housing and camping as well as an expansion to the golf course.
Dave Fischer, who was on the Pierz City Council starting in January 2017 and mayor starting in January 2019, said that of these three options, the first to be crossed off the list was housing, as there was room for expansion on the west side of town and the land was considered to be too valuable for housing due to its location. The second option to be crossed off was camping, as at around the same time, the city was looking into purchasing a gravel pit north of the existing Pierz campground at the time to turn into an expansion of the campground at a better price.
