Nelson Insurance Agency: 100 years of providing quality care to customers

For siblings Mikel and Karin Nelson, insurance starts with finding out what a customer needs, then finding coverage to match. It’s a personal approach that has carried their family-owned business to a milestone: 100 years of service.

Albert J. Nelson Sr. started Nelson Insurance Agency in Upsala from his home office in 1926. Mikel said he does not know exactly why his grandfather started the business, but it initially supplemented Nelson Sr.’s income before becoming his full-time occupation.

“In the early 1930s he got involved with a small company called Elmdale Mutual. Elmdale was run and managed by a man just north of the city of Elmdale. Grandpa took over management and ran the agency, and then in the ’50s our dad [Albert Nelson Jr.] came home and went to work with Grandpa. Then over the ’60s he took management of Elmdale,” Mikel said.
