Almost a decade ago, St. Gabriel Hospital Auxiliary, renamed themselves to “advocates” to steer away from the idea that only women could join. While the name changed, their purpose remains the same: raise funds to support St. Gabriel Hospital and affiliates while also enhancing relationships with the community. Today, with the support of many volunteers along the years, the St. Gabriel Hospital Advocates are celebrating 80 years in service.
The first meeting of the Advocates (formerly auxiliaries) was held on Nov. 5, 1946 and recorded 30 members. The membership was opened county-wide and the group consisted of community members and doctor’s wives who had become inactive and wanted to continue supporting the hospital in any way. The roll-call showed members coming from Pierz, Royalton, Randall, Buckman, Bowlus, Swanville, Flensburg, Little Rock, Elmdale, Freedham, and Little Falls.
