Men, women and children braved the freezing temperatures to honor fallen veterans in the annual National Day of Remembrance ceremony at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Saturday, Dec. 13.

“Welcome to the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery and thank you for joining us for the National Remembrance ceremony as we partner with Wreaths for the Fallen to honor the veterans military spouses and dependents that are laid to rest on these hallowed grounds,” said Erik Sogge, Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery administrator.

Following Sogge’s address, which was significantly shortened due to the cold weather, Sue Kliber of Little Falls played the guitar and sang The Star-Spangled Banner. Besides her own love for the Flag and country, Kliber said what made performing at the event even more special was the fact that two of her loved ones are buried at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. One is her husband David Kliber, a Marine, who left for Vietnam at the age of 18 and returned to his family farm at midnight on Christmas Eve in 1969 with a Purple Heart for a leg injury.
