Being nominated for and receiving the Outstanding Conservationist Award from the Morrison Soil & Water Conservation District mean a lot to Curt and Janice Plante, who own Plante Farms in Fort Ripley. To celebrate various award winners, including the Plantes, a program was held Jan. 23 at the Morrison County Government Center in Little Falls.

Morrison Soil & Water Conservation District Manager Shannon Wettstein said the Plante family — including their son, Brian, and right-hand man Eric Swaser — reflects three generations of stewardship, with a fourth on the rise. The family integrates livestock, cropland, forestry and habitat management into a holistic conservation system across 850 acres within the Mississippi-Brainerd Watershed.

The Plantes’ hog operation is a Tier 4 feedlot facility certified by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and, as such, ensures zero runoff.
