During its Tuesday, Dec. 17 meeting, the Morrison County Board of Commissioners approved two key ordinances to regulate the cannabis industry within the county. This action comes in response to the Minnesota state legislature passing a cannabis legalization bill that went into effect on Aug. 1, 2023 and in anticipation of the ending of the retail cannabis business moratorium on Jan. 1, 2025.
Although the vote to pass both ordinances was unanimous, Commissioner Jeffrey Jelinski was unable to cast any votes during the meeting, as he had joined the meeting virtually due to an illness.
The first ordinance establishes zoning standards and restrictions for cannabis businesses operating outside of incorporated city limits. The ordinance sets forth guidelines on the time, place and manner of cannabis operations, including required distances from schools, residential treatment facilities and other sensitive areas.
