The city of Baxter received a 2.5 million Department of Defense grant for improved access to Mississippi Overlook Park and a connection to Sylvan Township.
Todd Holman, former Baxter City Council member, brought the proposed project before the council last winter. Holman is the Mississippi Headwaters program director and the Camp Ripley Sentinel Landscape coordinator.
At the Tuesday, Sept. 17, Baxter City Council meeting, Holman said he was excited to say the city won a DOD nationally competitive grant.
That's a big deal," Holman said, adding there will have to be a future celebration for the city for taking the project on.
The grant for phase one of a planned trail and access for Mississippi Overlook Park and the adjoining trail, which could be part of the Camp Ripley Veterans State Trail, with statewide implications for connections to other trail systems.
