As the temperatures begin to warm up after a long winter, Mike Skroch, owner of The Syrup Ranch in Bowlus, starts preparing for another maple syrup season. That includes walking around the woods and checking the tubes that run about eight miles and the roughly 3,000 taps in the trees. It is a lot of hard work, but one well worth it to see the sap travel through the tubes and later, get turned into a sweet, delicious maple syrup that not only their family have come to love, but many others, as well.

Skroch founded The Syrup Ranch in 2009. It all began when he was laid off of work during the recession in 2008. After a few months of hunting and ice fishing, he turned to tapping maple trees as something new to try. Reminiscing, Skroch said he never in a million years believed it would eventually grow into a large-scale business with his maple syrup being sold in stores and winning first place ribbons at the Minnesota State Fair.
