A multitude of people gathered at the Initiative Foundation in Little Falls, Tuesday, June 10, to hear a legislative update from Minnesota Farmers Union Government Relations Director Stu Lourey.
“I’m the lead on our Government Relations Team and whether they want me or not, if legislators are in St. Paul, I’m there too, sitting on cold benches and advocating for our priorities and making sure we’re bothering legislators about what we want to get done. I always try to say too that it’s a job I very much enjoy and it’s a job I take seriously and the way I view it, I represent you all at the Capitol,” he said.
Looking at the big picture, Lourey said the Minnesota Farmers Union sets the organization’s policy priorities on the grassroots level, which are then passed onto the county conventions, the policy committee, who then provide some recommendations to the state delegates. In turn, the state delegates debate the recommendations and eventually, they are incorporated into policy.
